The Physics of String Instruments

Have you ever wondered how string instruments actually work?
This website will use physics concepts to help explain common questions such as:
  • When playing a stringed instrument, what changes notes? What changes pitch?
  • How do you tune a stringed instrument? Why does that change the sound?
  • What is the physical difference between using a bow or pick and actually
    plucking the strings?
  • What is the purpose of the neck and body of the violin?

Believe it or not, all of these questions can be answered using physics!
